People at the Pyramids
The representation of Egyptian locals in front of the Pyramids of Giza is one of the most popular illustrations on postcards. The two postcards above are examples of how this was done. The black and white image is a photograph of Egyptian men on camels wearing traditional Egyptian clothing. The other postcard however, is a painting done with color. Whether or not the men are of higher status is unclear but there are more extravagant clothing on the camels which could suggest the men in the postcard are wealthy. It is important to notice that the representation of the people at the Pyramids is always from a far angle showing the full height of the Pyramids. Sometimes this was done to give tourists an idea of the magnitude of these structures but in these cases, they also create an ambiance of glory and power that the Pyramids exert onto humans. Many of the postcards of the late 20th century, highlight this difference in size to create mystery and magic around the concept of the Pyramids.
The postcards above create a similar representation of the grandeur of Pyramids via different media. The sepia colored postcard creates a unique outlook on the Pyramids by positioning structures and figures of contrasting size next to one another. The local Egyptian man positioned in front of the Pyramids are juxtaposed with the small buildings of the village in the background. There are also two figures walking towards the Pyramids which are much smaller than most of the other features on the postcard which emphasize the majesty of the Pyramids. The second postcard shifts some of the focus from the Pyramids onto the local tradesman by adding more camels to highlight the humanity of the structure and not only its splendor. The picturesque sunset however, dramatizes the mystery of this notorious location. It should be mentioned that the addition of camels next to Egyptian locals is existent in several postcards. These animals have always been an essential part of how tourists and foreigners have viewed Egypt. The mere mention of camels has always shifted the focus to Egyptian culture, and adding them to these images creates interest and fascination with the mystery behind the Great Pyramids of Giza.
