The Great Sphinx. Egypt.–This picture represents the
great Gizeh, or great Sphinx, being one of a group of
Sphinx that are supposed to be tombs and monuments of
the great kings of Egypt. This particular Sphinx is 188
feet in length and is hewn out of a natural eminence in
the solid rock. Steps lead down to the front of this won-
derful monument, where are sanctuaries and tablets of
very ancient dates. At one time they were most impos-
ing monuments, but centuries of changes have made a
desert of a once wonderful place, and the Sphinx are partly
submerged in sand.
